Black Summer, 2021

50 × 70 cm
Before the chaos that has engulfed life over the last 2 years, there was the chaos of the 2020 bushfires, killing 34 people and destroying 5900 buildings. This image depicts an exhausted firefighter amidst smouldering debris and thick smoke, after battling a fire at a property in Bombay. A powerful reminder that Mother Nature is both beautiful and fiercely unpredictable.
Coming from the Northern Rivers of NSW, I am surrounded by plenty of beautiful inspiration. Whether it be a beautiful sunset, water study or just something quirky that catches my eye. As an oil painter, my technique is quite realistic, a style that fascinates and constantly challenges me. More recently, I have been bringing a fun, retro vibe to my pieces, often using objects and scenes that create a story, and a little nostalgic magic to life.
