Transition, 2023

OIL AND ACRYLIC ON LINEN
76 × 76 cm
I’ve always had and affinity with Australian bush, I think it was my country upbringing that had something to do with it. Over the last many years that admiration and awe of its natural beauty has been the focus in my painting practice. My paintings are as a result of a practice driven process of observation, information gathering, drawing plein aire sketches and if no drawing material with me at time, snapping off a photograph with my mobile phone. Taking those references back to studio to aid my memory in painting a landscape that is reminiscent of what attracted me to it firstly. It can be the changing light and the way it casts shadows cross the land that holds my attention or the gradients of colour that is typical of the Australian land. “Transition” was a one of those moments caught just as the light was starting to change in the late afternoon.

Doug McNeill is currently completing his Bachelor of Fine Arts through the Queensland College of the Arts. He enjoys drawing and painting and being surrounded by the creative influences that inform and motivate him in his practice.

In recent years Doug’s practice has included figurative work and the Landscape as subjects, he is passionate about the environment and the Australian landscape with all its colours and beauty which informs his palette along with the works of many Australian artists he admires including Fred Williams and William Robinson
