This still life was inspired by the 1953 short story "Lamb To The Slaughter" by Roald Dahl. The short story is full of symbolism and served as great inspiration for the exploration of story telling in the artist's own work, through the genre of still life. Still life is an inherently symbolic tradition in painting and generates narrative through its subjects. The two objects in this piece symbolise one of the story's central characters, Mr Maloney. The piece was painted from life, using organic oil paints made by the artist. The frozen lamb was later cooked and eaten by the artist and his family.
