I’m drawn to ordinary corners of the city that don’t ask to be looked at. Back lanes, the sides of buildings, the spaces between them. What holds me there is pattern: serial elements resolving into geometry. Brick coursing, spiralling stairwells, the recurring windows of a distant skyline. This painting is a corner at the end of the day, precisely observed and completely ordinary. All of it was built for people. The brick laid to a pattern, the sign giving its instruction, but no one is here, and nothing is about to happen. The proportions hold and the light moves across. There is something both calm and strange about it. I’ve broken it down into its component parts, the coursing of the brick, the grid of a window, the long shapes the low sun makes across a wall, and painted it in heightened colour, closer to how it might look if you gave it your full attention.

Bianca Wilson is a painter based in Sydney’s Inner West. Her work examines the geometry of overlooked urban architecture, from spiralling stairwells to the recurring windows of a distant skyline. Largely self-taught, she holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) from the University of Sydney, where she majored in psychology. She has exhibited casually in Sydney and Melbourne, was a 2024 finalist in the Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize, and undertook the PADA residency in Lisbon where her work was included in the programme’s group exhibition.
