Kirchberg is a remembered landscape rather than a depicted one. I painted this small, Austrian chapel from memory, allowing the uncertainty of recollection to shape the image. The chapel remains relatively distinct, rising vertically from a landscape that seems to dissolve around it. The cross becomes a point of stillness within this shifting field of colour.
There is no precise geography. The greens & yellows suggest the way memory preserves certain colours, gestures and sensations while allowing other details to disappear.
The chapel was a favourite place of mine and represents something enduring within that process of forgetting: a place, a moment, perhaps a feeling, that remains when the surrounding landscape has become uncertain. The painting is an attempt to remember not what the place looked like, but what remains of it in my mind.
