Mary’s current series explores the interplay between fabric folds, the technique of trompe l’œil, and the structure of the grid. By examining these elements within a still-life context, her work draws on two art historical threads: the representation of fabric folds and the tradition of single-object still-life paintings. Mary is interested in the visual and conceptual possibilities of painting unfolded fabric, exploring how a flat surface can represent a three-dimensional object. The familiar objects she chooses, such as handkerchiefs and teatowels, can carry personal associations, yet Mary seeks to maintain an open-ended interpretation by isolating them from any specific context. Drawn to the subtle traces of human interaction left on the fabric, Mary enjoys the visual tension between order and disorder. When the fabric is unfolded, it introduces disruptions to the grid, revealing this interplay. The dialogue between order and complexity is enhanced by the careful layering of oil paint, which creates depth and luminosity. The paintings can lead us to question the nature of representation; while the viewer might see the image of a handkerchief, they are ultimately looking at a skin of oil paint on a fabric surface. This invites the viewer to consider the boundary between reality and illusion in their perception of space.

Sydney-based artist Mary Stack works within the tradition of still life to examine the nature of perception and consider the visual tension between order and disorder. Her work combines formal and conceptual elements and reflects a close observation and attention to detail. Mary’s work has been shown in several exhibitions in Sydney, including CBD Gallery and Sydney Road Gallery. Mary completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2023, and the National Art School purchased her work Untitled (Teatowel II) for their permanent collection. She has a diverse background, having worked as a lawyer before beginning her visual arts journey.
