The year of who knows?, 2023

Mignon Steele is an independent artist based in the Illawarra who works primarily as a painter. Her compositions express curiosity and reverence towards biological and geological systems at work. Observations or ‘noticings’ compound in fragments of constructed spatial landscapes, and unfurl with echoes of microscopic and celestial organisms.
Steele paints from the place where human strangeness and the natural world intersect; from where anxieties, optimism and the awkward humour of being human all collide.

Mignon Steele is an independent artist based in the Illawarra who has exhibited in Sydney, Darwin, Melbourne, Newcastle and Wollongong. In recent years she has been a finalist in prizes such as Hazelhurst Art on Paper, Milburn Art Prize, Fisher’s Ghost and Flow at Wollongong Art Gallery. Steele has undertaken residencies at The Lockup Art Space in Newcastle, Gang Gang Residency Cuttagee and The Bank in Port Kembla.
Mignon is also part of an ongoing collaborative practice within the multidisciplinary duo Barnacle Studio which allows an expansion upon her individual work into site-specific painting, architectural colour and community art projects.
