My primary concern is a fundamental question of how to construct a painting. I use my own collected images, often collaged together, as reference to build a scene that can be familiar but also fictional. I’m often trying to resolve a collection of disparate techniques of picture making on the same surface that serves as a tension between, for example, figurative and abstract elements, gestural and geometric. While often excited by developments of current contemporary artists, the great 20th century painters (Braque, Bonnard, Diebenkorn, de Kooning, to name only a few) are the spine of my influence and their work continues to inform my studio practice.
