Ooh I like that house (+ chairs), 2024

ACRYLIC ON BOARD
63 × 93 cm
This particular house caught my eye while gathering ideas for my last show, which featured houses from the Shoalhaven region. The painting is a fun slice of pop art intersecting with realism to immortalise an iconic Nowra house. Through the subjects of house facades, domestic objects, interiors and backyard scenes, I aim to evoke nostalgia and a sense of belonging. My paintings reflect not just the suburban landscapes that surround us but also the memories and shared history that define our local identity and sense of community. My intention is to capture the everyday beauty that is all around us, which can often be overlooked, and allow people to rediscover their sense of pride and awe in their backyards. Through attention to lighting, shadows and bright colours, I bring something sentimental to my work, turning the ordinary into something more deliberate, beautiful and familiar. Ooh I like that house (+ chairs) evolved in stages as I added the retro lawn chairs to complete the 70s character.

I graduated with a Masters of Creative Arts from the University of Wollongong in 2009 and have developed my professional practice on Dharawal country in the Illawarra. My painting approach combines traditional with contemporary elements, primarily focusing on realism.
I work as an art installer in several art galleries, which complements and supports my art practice. My daily life is balanced between parenting my little boy, maintaining my art practice and pursuing my jobs in the arts.
