Nostalgic Brew, 2024

STONEWARE CLAY
50 × 32 × 30 cm
I have always been captivated by the narratives of heritage buildings, which allow me to travel back in time, experiencing the physical spaces where history unfolded. How do architectural styles reflect the cultural and social values of their inhabitants throughout history? In what ways does the preservation of historic buildings contribute to the collective memory and identity of a community? “Nostalgic Brew” was created as a vessel of cultural memory from my birthplace, Singapore. The array of shophouses serves as a cornerstone of the rich, multicultural heritage. “Nostalgic Brew” is an introspective reflection of my self-identity, preserving my culture through my art practice while embracing Australia as my new home. A conversation starter, the teapot form embodies the spirit of sharing, extending an invitation to connect with me as an artist and to engage in the exchange of shared experiences, drawing parallels in art forms, culture, and traditions.

I am a ceramic artist living and creating on Turrbal and Yuggera Country. My journey into ceramics began as a form of self-discovery and expression, providing me with moments of calm amidst the demands of being a primary caregiver.

As a budding ceramic artist, I embrace the freedom to explore clay as a medium for expressing and storytelling about my interconnectedness with time, place, and people. Living in and experiencing Australia’s stunning natural landscape, resonating with Indigenous cultures, and my passion for traveling and engaging with diverse cultures and traditions, inspire me to tell stories through my ceramic art.
