Minor Swing, 2023

MIXED MEDIA ON PAPER
90 × 68 cm
This work on paper marks a change in my art practice from a sculptor working in the three-dimensional to a two-dimensional format. Employing the same sense of physical connection as when working with steel and concrete, I physically move in and out applying varied layers of contrasting colours and lines. There is no prior planning as one mark or layer leads to the next in search of projecting a sense of play and static movement. At the root of my process is a connection to m music, my body movement, and the architectural space in which the work evolves. It is not intentional to directly represent any three of these elements , yet they are always there in some abstract form. Much like the improvisation of a jazz musician, the musician’s movement, the layering of each instrument’s sound with one note following the next, ‘Minor Swing’ is the culmination of this process in the visual form.
