Debbie Hill

Grail, 2021

20 cm
My hand- built porcelain sculptural works explore the minutiae of fragile organisms that exist in our world; some can be seen clearly whilst others will never be seen with the naked eye. These works are repositories of ideas, thoughts and hope, they transpose ideas from mythology and religion to create a conversation about the environmental crisis we are experiencing. I work with unglazed porcelain to highlight the fragility of not only the material but of our environment too.
Born in Melbourne and currently residing in Hobart, Tasmania, Debbie Hill graduated from BFA (Drawing major) from the University of Ballarat where she was awarded the International Travel and NGV Trustees awards. Since completing her BFA, Debbie completed her Honours year at ACU National, Melbourne, and has developed her practice by exhibiting nationally and internationally, being shortlisted in a number of significant art prizes and undertaking a number of residencies both in Australia and overseas including the Leighton Artist Colony at the Banff Arts Centre, Canada. Teaching and community engagement has been a significant part of her practice; lecturing drawing and sculpture at Federation University and ACU in Ballarat, being a founding member of an artist run initiative and holding roles on the Art Gallery of Ballarat Board and Association.
