Kate Vella

Fruit and Wisteria, 2021

61 × 51 cm
My work is an interpretation of homely and familiar objects I find in my surroundings. I work in a simplified style drawing attention to the curious nature of my subjects.

My process involves searching antique stores or finding the perfect objects in my home. I then arrange them with the correct light and surface, imbuing these everyday items with a new life and identity. I frequently include home grown flowers and fruit, as I do find the arrangement of petals or the seeds in cut fruit to be intriguing and fascinating.

I use rich tones softened by grey and white, applying numerous layers to my work I paint over earlier marks as I aim for a pentimento result.

Through the composition and perspective, my aim is to evoke a feeling of familiarity and a sense of wonder to the viewer .
