FLAT ROCK, RIVER CROSSING, 7TH ANGLE, 2024

INK ON CANVAS
120 × 92 cm
Over the past few years I have focused on creating a sense of place by doing multiple landscape drawings from one position. Standing on one rock or patch of grass, I draw the views from different angles around that point, providing a unique view of how truly beautiful and diverse an individual spot can be. I was first inspired to do this in Flat Rock Gully in Cammeray; these pictures showcase the views from the river crossing of that gully. The drawings are done using ink with a dipping pen. Rather than trying to match the hues and tones of the bush, the ink provides an impression of the landscape, revealing its beauty with one single colour. The area also has a fascinating history, being such an important thoroughfare, playground, hunting and fishing ground for the local indigenous people for thousands of years.

Drew is an Australian artist based in Sydney. He typically uses ink with a dipping pen, providing a textural, simple approach to portraits and landscapes. The use of ink provides an impression, revealing the subject with a single colour.
