Earth & Ether, 2024

STONEWARE
57 × 20 × 19 cm
‘Earth & Ether’ is a large, ornate, hand-coiled vessel made from stoneware clay. It features detailed sprig reliefs decorated with underglazes. By inviting the viewer to see the moths as precious gems, I hope to foster a connection to the natural world that is both personal and universal. Art has the power to reshape our perceptions, and through this piece, I hope to inspire a renewed sense of wonder and respect for nature. My aim was for the moths to be like hidden treasures, urging the viewer to look closer and discover a new sense of awe for our natural world & be inspired to cherish the natural beauty that surrounds us all as an integral part of our lives.

In 2019, Casey studied for a Diploma in Ceramics at Gymea TAFE Institute, Sydney. Completing the degree with an award for outstanding achievement, receiving ‘The Diploma of Ceramics Highest Excellence.’
In her early ceramic exploration, Casey tried slip casting, mould making, sculpting with & without armature, throwing functional vessels on the potter’s wheel, tile making, and hand building with coils & slabs.
Her body of work usually includes figurative sculptures of various sizes and a range of ornate vessels covered in her sprig relief designs. Casey hopes to evoke the sense of joy and wonder one would experience looking at a natural marvel or a rare gem.
