Erin Snelgrove

Breathe into silence, 2023

ACRYLIC ON CANVAS
61 × 61 cm
Exploring notions of transience, perception and (dis)connection, natural landscapes often feature as a point of departure in my distinctly emotive and intuitive practice. Erin Snelgrove’s background in commercial art informs an instinctual use of colour and composition that is both spontaneous and deeply introspective. Snelgrove’s paintings are generally ordained in title with a poetic reference or quote, most commonly borrowed from e e cummings (Edward Estlin Cummings). These words work to further articulate and reinforce the sentiment imbued in my painting.

Erin Snelgrove is a Sydney (Australia) based artist who studied at the College of Fine Arts (UNSW), Erin Snelgrove cut short an established, international textile design career to try to satisfy her longing for a creative practice with less emphasis on commercial outcomes.

Born on Cammeraygal country (Sydney, Australia) in 1978, Erin is grateful to live and work harbourside on Gadigal/Wangal/Bidjigal country with her son Leo and very large cat, Bowie. From 2004 to 2014 she worked as a commercial textile designer with clients in Australia, New Zealand, UK and the US and continued work as an illustrator and print-based graphic designer until 2018.
