Growing up in a very unconventional household, this work deals with the memory and emotion of coming to terms with my dystopian childhood. This abstract autobiographical body of work is a reflection of my ‘shadow self’ which I felt like I couldn’t shy away from anymore, exploring the layered nuances of my upbringing and growing up in Australia in the 80s. Through this painting I explore memories and details of past events that have, until now, been forced into the background. By facing the ‘shadow aspects’ of myself traversing hurt, anger, pain, joy, trauma, optimism, humour, love and gratitude, this is a personal journey, allowing for my own restoration, repair and empowerment. Delving into the intricacies of the human condition, my work is a visual testament to ongoing self-discovery and my current practice explores the juxtaposition of stillness and movement. I draw inspiration from a profound curiosity shaped by global travels and diverse life encounters. The painting is curious in subject matter, and invites the viewer into the visual realm to decide what their relationship is to it and inform their own subjective response.
