Sometimes I feel far away from you, 2024

ACYLIC ON CANVAS
92 × 92 cm
This still life, Sometimes I Feel Far Away from You, features a collection of my pots and vases, with a flower I have picked from around my studio. These objects and plants appear in many of my works, creating a sense of place and familiarity. I have used colour and loose and expressive lines to capture the impression of the objects and the spaces in between them. The work draws attention to the process of painting and that it is human, expressive, and imperfect. I am interested in creating a sense of immediacy and intimacy, inviting the viewer to connect with the work and the moment the paint was applied. The work’s title reflects what I was contemplating at the time of painting and anchors the work in my subjectivity. The painting process often allows one to contemplate many things, including the people and relationships in our lives. These thoughts and feelings get infused in the work, creating a more intimate lens.

Sophie Witter began painting as a way of engaging with and representing the objects and relationships in her life. Sophie is a self-taught artist who lives and works in Hobart, Tasmania, with her partner and four children.

Sophie works predominantly with paint and uses colour and line as a starting point in her works. From there, the process is intuitive and informed by the moment in time in which it is being created. Sophie’s works focus on a range of subjects drawn from her life, including still lifes, portraits and real and imagined landscapes. She is interested in drawing attention to the process of painting and its human, subjective and imperfect nature.

Sophie has exhibited with a range of galleries Including Despard Gallery and Penny Contemporary. In 2023, she was a finalist in the Henry Jones Art Prize, the Hawkesbury Art Prize and the National Emerging Art Prize.
