One thing at a time, 2024

OIL ON CANVAS WITH FLOATING HARDWOOD FRAME
50 × 40 cm
When we take a photograph it’s often the case that multiple areas of the scene are in perfect focus (if not the whole scene). I’ve realised that this is a misrepresentation of how life really is. In reality, our eyes only focus on one thing at a time, with the peripheral view gradually blurring out into soft focus. I think we can sometimes feel pressured for our lives to be like a photograph, with everything in focus at once. This painting titled ‘One thing at a time’ is a reminder to myself to keep my focus where it matters. To not get caught up with what’s happening in other people’s storylines. To not be worried about where I think I ‘should’ be in my life and my career and what I ‘should’ be doing, but to instead stay true to myself and to keep my focus on what brings me the most joy. The sunshine glaring through from the background portrays how it’s only natural to sometimes be blinded by the outside noise of life. We’re exposed to so much in this day and age and it’s hard to not get caught up in a comparison spiral. But it’s ok to slow down and run your own race. The blurred background represents that it’s important to be aware of the things around us, they all add value, but they aren’t the focal point. Which brings me to the dandelion. The hero of this painting. When I pick up a brush and push paint across the canvas, everything else fades away. In those moments I’m able to truly focus on what’s important to me. To block out the noise and trust in my own journey. One thing at a time.
